LO: To model and represent common fractions.
Know:
-
the structure of a fraction
-
what a numerator in a fraction represents (they are the pieces of a whole)
-
what a denominator in a fraction represents (they are the total pieces that make a whole)
Understand:
-
that fractions have individual values which are less than a whole piece.
Do:
-
I can model and represent unit fractions.
What are Fractions?

The numerator is the top number of a fraction, it represents how many pieces out of the whole there are.
The denominator is the bottom number of a fraction and it represents how many total pieces there are in a whole piece.
Halves

This fraction is a half.
It shows that 1 piece out of the 2 is coloured in.
So 1 is the numerator and 2 is the denominator.
Two-halves make a whole.

It shows that 1 piece out of the 3 is coloured in.
So 1 is the numerator and 3 is the denominator.
Three 1/3 pieces make a whole piece.
