Applying the Distributive Laws to the Expansion of Algebraic Expressions (8)

Apply the distributive law to the expansion of algebraic expressions, including binomials, and collect like terms where appropriate(ACMNA213)

LO: To apply the distributive law to expand algebraic expressions.

Know:

    • What the distributive law is.

Understand:

  • That the distributive law can be used to expand algebraic expressions.

Do:

  • I can use the distributive law to expand algebraic expressions including binomials.

Essential Questions:

  • How can I use the distributive law to expand algebraic expressions?

Distributive Law

The distributive law is used to expand out an expression with a common factor.

Whatever the coefficient is, you multiply it to whatever is inside the brackets.

In this case, “k” is multiplied to “a” then to “b”, which gives you the expression of ka + kb.

In the second case, “a” is multiplied (or distributed) to “b” then to “c”, which gives you the expression of ab + ac.
