LO: To divide decimal numbers by other decimal numbers

Know:

  • how to divide numbers

Understand:

  • that dividing decimal numbers is similar to dividing regular numbers

Do:

  • I can divide decimal numbers by other decimal numbers

When dividing decimal numbers by other decimal numbers, before you just divide, you need to shift the decimal so that it creates a whole number to divide by.

In this case before you can divide by 0.08, you have to shift the decimal place 2 spots over, which means you need to shift the decimal 2 spots in the dividend, so that it becomes 722.4 / 8. After you shift the decimal places, then just proceed as normal to divide.

Remember to always double check for the reasonableness of answers!!!

In the example above, if I rounded 722.4 to 720. I know that 720 / 8 = 90, so my answer should be somewhere around 90.
