Converting Units of Measurement (6)

Convert between common metric units of length, mass and capacity (ACMMG136)

LO: To convert between the common metric units of length, mass and capacity.

Know:

  • the basic metric units used in measuring length, mass and capacity.

Understand:

  • that the common metric units of measurement are connected and can easily be converted into different units of measurement.

  • that the metric system is linked to the base 10 number system.

Do:

  • I can convert common metric units of measuring length, mass and capacity.

Length

Length measurements are used to measure how long, how tall or how far apart objects are.]

The most common units to measure length are:

  • millimeters (about the thickness of a bank card)

  • centimeters (about the width of a fingernail)

  • meters (about the length of a cricket bat)

  • kilometers (about 2 laps of the oval)

Mass

Mass measurements are used to measure how much material there is in an object. It is sometimes confused with weight, which is how much pull gravity has on an object.

The most common units to measure mass are:

  • milligrams (very tiny):

  • grams (about the weight of a paperclip)

  • kilograms (about the weight of a textbook)

  • tonne (about the weight of a small car)

Capacity

Capacity measurements are used to measure how much an object can hold. It is often confused with volume, which is how much is there actually in an object.

The most common units to measure mass are:

  • milliliters (about 20 drops of water)

  • liters (a jug of liquid)

  • kiloliters (a large swimming pool)
